It is worth noting that efforts are being made at the national level in the United States to strengthen methane regulations and reduce wastage of natural gas. In 2022, the United States passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes a provision to tax methane pollution at $1,500 per ton for emissions in 2026 and beyond. This signifies a potential shift in the regulatory approach and may help mitigate the environmental impact of oil and gas operations in the Permian Basin. Overall, the Permian Basin’s oil and gas operations have significant environmental consequences, particularly in terms of air pollution, CO2 emissions, and methane emissions. The varying regulations between Texas and New Mexico highlight the importance of effective environmental oversight and regulation to reduce the environmental impact of the industry
